Meet the Masters! A Music Appreciation Course Tuesday 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.

Meet the Masters!
A Music Appreciation Course for Junior High and High School Students

Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Copland, Bach…. This course offers an introduction to the great composers of Western classical music presented in a visually and aurally compelling manner.  Students will be given the opportunity to expand their understanding of the major works and figures in the classical repertoire.  Using film and video, audio examples, lectures, visual illustrations, score study, and interactive exercises, “Meet the Masters” will cover ten main canonic composers—composers whose works the students have or likely will encounter during their continued musical studies.  Though this course does focus on major figures in Western classical music, its structure will, by design, also introduce students to the six major eras of music; common musical genres, forms, and instrumentations; national styles; and relevant historical and social movements and events. Each class will consist of sixty minutes of lesson, segmented into shorter, discrete sections—the life and social context of the featured composer, an overview of two of their works, and an introduction to a contemporaneous composer with a brief overview of one of this second composer’s works.  This will be followed by twenty minutes of review, often in the form of a game show or other interactive activity, which will ask students to recall and synthesize information they have received to date.
