Meet the Masters!
A Music Appreciation Course for Junior High and High School Students
This 15-week course offers an introduction to the great composers of Western classical music presented in a visually and aurally compelling manner.  Students will be given the opportunity to expand their understanding of the major works and figures in the classical repertoire.  Using film and video, audio examples, lectures, visual illustrations, score study, and interactive exercises, “Meet the Masters” will cover canonic composers whose works the students will likely encounter during their continued musical studies.  The course will also introduce students to the six major eras of music; common musical genres, forms, and instrumentations; national styles; and relevant historical and social movements and events.
Young musicians benefit from courses that introduce them to these figures and concepts; this knowledge enhances their musical training and understanding of the music they perform, and informs them of the historical and modern-day significance of their repertoire.  This course aims to introduce students to this material in an engaging, enjoyable, and effective manner.
This course will be taught by Jessica Getman, an active oboist and musicologist.
