The Jazz Studies Program is designed for instrumentalists and vocalists looking for small ensemble experience with jazz styles from elementary age to adult. To schedule an audition time for placement, please call the office at (734) 213-2000.

Jazz Combos

Combos focus on traditional small-group jazz from New Orleans to Swing to Bebop and modern styles. Students from elementary-age kids to adults with intermediate to advanced ability on their instrument, ability to play all major scales, good music reading skills, and some knowledge of jazz theory and chord structures can be in a combo! Jazz combos are taught by Jazz Director Paul Finkbeiner. Please call the office at (734) 213-2000 for more information.

Course Description
Jazz Combo classes offer an opportunity to learn about and perform Jazz music in a small ensemble setting.

Goals/Objectives

Learn about music theory and how to apply it to Jazz Improvisation.
• Intervals
• Chords - Major, Minor, Dominant, Half Diminished and Altered Dominant
• Scales - as above
• Voice Leading
• Rhythms
Learn about Jazz history through listening and performing a wide variety of musical styles.
Learn how to read a lead sheet (melody and chords).
Learn how to make the music come to life through interpreting a lead sheet (arranging for small ensemble).
Learn the roles of each instrument in the small Jazz ensemble.

Introductory Jazz Combo, Saturday
